Wreck-It-Ralph Breaks The Internet, But Still Shows Us The Value Of Connection

Disclaimer: this blog does contain spoilers. If you have not watched it yet, and are planning on doing so, I suggest you watch before going ahead and reading this post. Don't forget to watch in theatres to correctly fund creativity. All pictures are credited to their rightful owners, they are not mine and can be disclosed if asked. 7/10 Ralph Breaks The Internet  starts of six years after the first film is made, and shows us Vanellope and Ralph are still as close since the ending of the first movie. The best buddy duo has a daily routine of going to their games for work in the day to then talking over some of Tapper's Root Beer. While Ralph expresses that he is totally okay with a mundane-homebody life they live, Vanellope is going through a state that is reminiscent to that of a mid-life crisis. She wants adventure, she is tired of predictability, and in comes our antagonist/protagonist: the wifi router. After Ralph's recklessness causes her game to be put out of order,...

The Shining With Underlying Themes of Sex and Abuse

Image
Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film The Shining has been reviewed time and time again, for multiple reasons including meanings, symbolism, and conspiracies. Though there are multiple themes throughout the movie, there seems to be one that is lacked, or not specifically touched on. Lack of sex, abuse, and molestation. It is very obvious from the getgo that Jack and Wendy are not very communicative or in love. To say that a director like Kubrick, who had many  films that had to do with sex, or a lack of, and the dangers it would cause did not think to make it an underlying theme, is ridiculous, and is just lacking sensitivity to his creativity. Though it is easily overlooked since there are other themes that are considered much more prevalent, the theme of sex is huge when I look at this movie, and I believe the thoughts about it should be shared, as it gives a different insight to the movie or what Kubrick could have been trying to pursue. If you go back and try to find interviews where he ...

El Semental Air

Some of the most amazing airports exist within California, however, El Semental is based  on none of them and exists  wholly within my               own imagination I was ten years old, attending an elementary school that looked like it had not been renovated since nineteen-seventy-four. The paint for hopscotch on the blacktop was faded, the numbers painted in pastel, tetherball ropes long from white, and the tree in the middle of the yard so big it could tell stories from one hundred years ago. It was November fourth and a couple days ago I had been dressed as a ballerina witch, as I had been in ballet for eight years already, but couldn't wear that attire to school as my mother was scared I'd fall and rip my tights or scuff up the soft leather of my ballet shoes. I had been drinking the strawberry milk that I would always get. I don't know why, but the recess had been longer that day. Long enough to be reading Breaking Dawn ...

Me Too

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month. The topic of it hits home and is not an easy thing for anyone to talk about, I think. It has been a year since the #MeToo movement has gone viral and a little over a year since I realized I was in an abusive relationship and left. I would also like to acknowledge that, if any of you feel you're in a toxic relationship, you should leave. It is extremely hard, and I understand, but it will never get better. Ever. Though I feel it is a safer place on the internet now, I disabled comments, and will likely never choose to open them. If anyone reading this feels a bitter or sour way about what I have to say, I suggest you just leave the blog as I finally have the strength to tell this story. I am not asking for you to believe me, I am only doing this to symbolize that my abuser no longer has the mental hold over me as he used to. I also want everyone reading this to know I consider myself a survivor, not a victim. Going into fresh...

Life before 9/11

When 9/11 occurred, I was still an infant, but my knowledge on the topic is extensive thanks to my mother who has taught me that the day should never be forgotten, as well as what it meant for this country. As I was stumped on what topic or subject I should write next, one of my younger friends texted me. She is only a few years younger and didn't understand the outcome of that day. She was shocked the most to know that a lot of things were very different before. Therefore, it inspired me to ask a handful of adults in my life about their own lives before 9/11. I am a liberal with many different views, and proud, but that does not mean I can forget an event that has defined, not only our country but also the rest of the world. Every year, I solemnly take time to reflect on the events of this day. To ask about a world before is only to honor the lives lost, not to forget, to be nostalgic, and to reflect on how we can try to make the world a better place. N.V., 43 years ...
